  • Helps with career progression and promotion as you are investing in yourself
  • Keeps you in control of you career
  • Increases your professional value and expands your capabilities

Want to know what careers you can do with the skills you already have and what skills do you need to gain?

Firstly we all have skills we have picked up throughout our life so far, cross relating those skills is a big thing in business. Clever employers look for employees that can be up-skilled firstly by their abilities to take on the training and achieve and secondly by their proven record and sometimes that can be proved by skills gained outside the workplace. So no skills go to waste.

Now it’s time to ensure you take advantage of the employment and promotion opportunities this is a great time to bring your skills up. There has never been a better time for sure. There is a funding given to lots of organisations to get as many people upskilled as possible.
So where to start?

Firstly which area are you looking to upskill in what courses are available and how feasible is it for you. Secondly make a plan, write it down a mission plan with your goals and dreams and how step by step you can get there.

A great way to know your strengths and what possible career to pursue is to do interest testing to ensure you are going in the direction you want to go in.

If you’re not sure of your ability strengths by taking an occupational ability test you will have the knowledge of what your strengths are and have greater confidence in getting on to the next level.
Your skills describe what you like to do and what you are good at. You develop skills by training and experience that improve your ability to do tasks.

What skills do I have?

We all have skills developed over time in work and in life which can be cross related to your career. Make a list of skills you have; don’t underestimate skills you have gained in your personal life. A list could look like:

  • Active Listening
  • Adaptability
  • Communication
  • Creativity
  • Critical Thinking
  • Customer Service
  • Decision Making
  • Interpersonal Communication

When thinking of business a list could look like:

  • Commercial awareness (or business acumen)
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Negotiation and persuasion
  • Problem solving
  • Leadership
  • Organisation
  • Perseverance and motivation

Look at your list to expand how you got these skills which skills are your strengths.

What education or professional attainments have you achieved so far:

Look at the education/professional accreditation/craft you have achieved so far make a list of every course and certificate you have up to now.

So as upskilling is ensuring you are ahead and making sure you don’t get left behind this list is a good place to start. What’s missing? What gaps do you have in training?

Do you know what gaps you have? If not, why not look for professional advice to advise you on your strengths and skills and help make a plan to upskill.

Plans & Goals:

By having made your list of skills and attainments so far, also maybe by getting help from a career adviser on your strengths and skills. You are ready to plan out up skilling towards your goals.

First list out your goals where do you want to go with the training is it Management, Technical etc or do you want to fill gaps in your role that make you feel less confident doing the job also you may see progress coming down the tracks and want to get tooled up before it hits.

Then time to plan around your goals, do your research on training courses are there any online, part time. Is there funding through your company or through a training government body. There are lots of training available right now. We offer sessions to go through this with you.

Look at the end result of the course. What will the course give you? Ensure the curriculum covered is specific to what you are looking for.

We always make sure to provide you with sound advice
